Book The Girl Who Escaped from Auschwitz: A totally gripping and absolutely heartbreaking World War 2 page-turner, based on a true story Review :

The Girl Who Escaped Auschwitz is another poignant and captivating story from the brilliant mind of Ellie Midwood. What can I say? After reading her first novel, The Violinist of Auschwitz, I must admit I had high expectations for this one. First and foremost, I was not disappointed and neither will you be if you choose to read any of her books! I am so astounded at her ability in writing words that flow with such ease over the deplorable settings she writes about. She doesn’t transport you to another time and place, she lives there and invites you to sit next to her in the death camp while she tells these stories. I think another reviewer said “brutally authentic” and I have to concur. And the way love is portrayed as a contrast to the evil in the camp is stunning. I’ve said this before but it bears repeating – Ellie Midwood is a genius wordsmith, an old soul bringing these people back to life in her words. Mala and Edek, another inspiring couple, and another five-star heart-wrenching story worthy of reading again and again. Highly recommend!!I received this book through Netgalley.
The Girl Who Escaped from Auschwitz is based on the true story of Mally Zimetbaum and Edek (Edward) Galinski and their escape attempt from Auschwitz. It is written by Ellie Midwood. It is listed as historical biographical fiction. Many of the characters are actual people who were there in Auschwitz and actual events that happened, license has been taken to condense some time frames and add names to unknown people. The escape attempt did happen.Mally was a runner in the camp. That gave her privileges that no one else had. She could go places in the camp that others could not and could carry secret messages and items from person to person. Although she was not officially a part of the resistance in the camp, she helped them as she helped many others in the camp. Unlike most women of this time, she had been brought up educated and taught to think for herself and not be afraid to work and take risks. This upbringing along with her having joined a group who trained for the ruggedness of Palestine, she believed helped her survive so far in the camp.Edek Galinski was a Polish prisoner, one of the first brought to the camp. He and his friend, Wieslaw Kielar, had been through these horrors together and were planning an escape once they had everything lined up. Edek would walk Wieslaw out of the camp. Edek would wear an SS uniform and take Wieslaw to fix something. Edek would get a uniform from his sympathetic boss, an officer who was disillusioned about Hitler and the system. All they needed was a pass. This led them to meeting Mally who was said could get anything. Would she help them? Why did she decide to help Edek? Why did she decide to ask him to take her with them? Would their plan work?
